AMERICAN BEVERAGE ASSOCIATION
From their website: "The American Beverage Association (ABA) is the trade association that represents America's non-alcoholic beverage industry. ABA was founded in 1919 as the American Bottlers of Carbonated Beverages, and renamed the National Soft Drink Association in 1966. Today the ABA represents hundreds of beverage producers, distributors, franchise companies and support industries." This trade group spends millions of dollars to promote the prosperity the industry, its members and their interests. While sales of sugary sodas is on the decline based on consumer trends, this organization helped to build sales over the years. One of their current initiatives is to oppose municipalities that want to introduce taxes to discourage the sale of sodas. They also support the business of non-alcoholic beverages, as well as serve to educate on the benefits of hydration, the safety of artificial sweeteners and energy drinks and other hot-topic issues. As with many advocacy groups, their activities may concurrently promote and discourage use of certain products, such as helping member companies promote sugary drinks while also lobbying to remove sugary drinks from school vending machines. So be aware of issues, learn about them, and try to understand if an organization is promoting only unhealthy products, or presenting options for consuming both unhealthy and healthy products. Education is key - no matter how much information and persuasion an organization offers to the public, the ultimate choice resides with the shopper.
