From mom & pop stores of yesteryear to the mega-chains of today, the face of retailing has certainly changed.  Yet the goal remains the same - provide shoppers with a clean, well-stocked store in which to shop.  New ways abound for retailers to connect with their customers and differentiate them from competing markets - like shopper loyalty cards, online coupons, informational websites and more.   And meal kit companies are the newest trend - which deliver to your doorstep all of the ingredients you need to make meals for the week.  Take a peak below at some retailers that may not be located in your hometown.

THE FRESH MARKET

Described as a "European-style" specialty retailer with old world charm and warm lighting (yes, some markets are blindingly bright, but not this one), that provides "an extraordinary food shopping experience," The Fresh Market offers produce, groceries, bakery, bulk coffee and candy in a relaxed setting.  See their Recipes, Cooking Ideas, Tips and Instructional Videos.  They may not be the least expensive, but they may be the most attractive and laid back store.   Based in Greensboro, NC with 176 stores in 24 states, primarily in the eastern and mid-US.
