FROM THE FARMERS - Poultry
"A chicken in every pot" is a phrase most often associated with King Henry IV of France (late 1500s) and Herbert Hoover's presidential campaign in 1928, and was equated with prosperity. Nowadays, chicken is a ubiquitous dish in homes and restaurants. In recent years, the poultry industry has come under fire from consumer advocate groups and movies (i.e. Food, Inc.) for the conditions under which poultry is raised. For the counterpoint, see how the industry portrays itself to the public. For EGGS, click here.

NATIONAL CHICKEN COUNCIL
Chickens raised for meat (as opposed to hen-laying chickens) are called "broilers." which explains why this association was called the National Broiler Association from 1954 through1999. This organization is responsible for representing the interests of farmers and companies that grow or process chicken to the government regulators, as well as consumer outreach. In response to criticism regarding poor living conditions, the organization created Chicken Check In, a peek at how chickens are grown and processed, with video and text. You can see "A Day In The Life" of a chicken as well as how chickens get from farm to table.

CHICKEN ROOST
Consumer outreach from the National Chicken Council. Offers recipes, cooking and food safety tips and videos. Celebrate Chicken Month (September) with special promotions. Download their brochure to learn why Chicken is "the preferred protein for your health and budget." The council's other site, Chicken Check In (see above) has infographics such as just what does the 1.3 billion chicken wings eaten during Super Bowl look like, and are chickens bigger than years past (yes!) and why.

US POULTRY & EGG ASSOCIATION
According to their website, this "is the world's largest and most active poultry organization. We represent the entire industry as an "All Feather" association. Membership includes producers and processors of broilers, turkeys, ducks, eggs, and breeding stock, as well as allied companies. Formed in 1947, the association has affiliations in 27 states and member companies worldwide." Check out their Publications and Resources section.
